Around The World in Eight Birthdays
My twin girls turned 8 over the weekend (why do their birthdays make me feel older than mine, anyway?) One has been obsessed with Japan for a long time, and both of them have become interested in other countries as a result of a poster project they did in school this past year, so they requested an "Around the World" theme for their birthday party: food from different countries to eat, games from different countries to play, and my wife even tried to put together goodie bags of candy and treats from around the world for the kids in attendance. My wife put together some spaghetti and meatballs, bought a few French meat pies, and I was tasked with cooking the rest: chicken tikka masala, mango lassis, "spotted dog", pasta, ratatouille, sushi, and the all-important birthday cake.
My kids immediately requested a cake shaped like the world—a globe, in fact. Making and decorating a spherical cake is a bit outside my skill level, so I negotiated them down to a map of the world. This is the result: a two-layer 13"x9" cake (boxed cake mix, since they wanted funfetti cake), covered in buttercream and wrapped in homemade marshmallow fondant. The map items were made by printing out a map of the world, scaled a bit to fit the dimensions of the cake, and using that as cutting templates for a little more fondant. The coloring is a brushed-on edible color powder, and the writing was done with edible markers (my handwriting is usually write-only, so this is neat for me–although I've done calligraphy in the past, these pens were more challenging to write with than I expected). The South Pacific looked a little barren, so I added a sea serpent (not to scale) and a "There Be Dragons" blurb as well. Not including baking the layers, this was a solid 3 hours of work. With the exception of a small piece of toothpick to support the head of the sea serpent, this was entirely edible.
This, of course, means that next year's request will be even more complicated. Guess I should start practicing now…
Was already running a little behind in my prep for the day, so I just whisked this out onto the porch to shoot a few shots in the natural light. I took about a dozen shots, and didn't get anything that I thought was composed quite the way I wanted, although this isn't too bad.
Vintage Farmer Bear Children's Dish Set
This is a fantastic children's dish set made from porcelain and decorated with a detailed country farmer bear! What is even more interesting about this set is that it is new, never used condition and still has the orginal "Simpsons" sticker on each piece.
The Simsons sticker in itself is a little bit of history, as it shows how the Simpsons name was branded for a very short period of time. Up until 1972 the Simppons name had an apostrophe before the last S. (Simpson's) but in an attempt to make the name friendlier to both English and French customer, they dropped the apostrophe. Then in 1973 and 1974 they gradually renamed all the Simpson stores over to the Sears name. The one flagship store in Toronto that retained the Simpsons name still sold their items branded as Simpson-Sears. In short, this set can accurately be dated to 1972-1974.
The plate is 6.5 inches wide, the bowl 4.5 inches across and 2 inches tall and the cup is 2.5 inches wide (3.5 with handle) and 3 inches tall. When the set is together the total height is 5.5 inches tall. There are no major chips, cracks, blemishes or marks on this set. All the pieces are in mint condition.
