Kenya safaris and holidays: Exclusive African safari holidays and safaris in Kenya.

Kenya is the original home of African safari (safari means travel in Swahili). It is the most popular African safari country for safari holidays. Very diverse natural resources including the world-famous annual Wildebeest Migration at Maasai Mara game reserve, from coral reefs to the rich culture and traditions of the old age masai community, breathtaking sceneries and Mountain peaks.

History has it that Man’s earliest ancestors may well have originated here in Africa, Turkana, Northern Kenya as long as five million years ago.
Safari in Kenya starting from Nairobi to Serena Mountain lodge, a Treehotel perched on the slopes of Mount Kenya, for night game viewing, the spectacular birdlife, majestic scenery of the Great Rift Valley lakes and one of Kenya’s finest game reserves – Masai Mara...
THE MAASAI MARA WILDEBEEST MIGRATION SAFARI
"Africa's biggest wildlife spectacle"

Kenya Wildlife Safari: Wildebeest Migration
"The seventh greatest wonder in the world". It is now officially known through out the world. Many have come back time and again. They have witnessed this mass movement of wild animals roaming free through unspoiled and savage wilderness. The air fills with the click- click of the cameras tirelessly. You have not seen something like this before.
Africa is changing at a quick pace and human encroachment into the wildlife reserves has continued to erase the traditional routes. In association with development and changes of the way of life, the image of wildlife roaming free is slowly getting erased. Fortunately, Masai Mara National reserve holds on to its charisma of an open, limitless land. It is one of the places in Africa that still prides in wildlife concentration.
Masai Mara is located in the South-western of Kenya, 290 kilometers from Nairobi. The abundance of wildlife and the remoteness of the reserve implants memories that no money can buy.
The Migration is a recent phenomenon (60's and 70's was the biggest boom) with about 250,000
individuals. Gradually, with time the number has risen to the current population of over 3,000,000
individuals. Add to it an estimated 1,500,000 Zebras and the result is one of the most magnificent scenes in the world. The massive display attracts hundreds of big cats as the populations provide abundant prey. The giant African crocodiles lie in wait, patiently, as the big herds come to cross the river or to drink.
It is the masai community who are not so pleased with the whole phenomenon. The wildebeests compete with their huge herds of boran cattle for the grasslands. To them, it is a big calamity especially because the wildebeests transmit diseases to their herds and poison the waters with their fetal sacs.
This world famous migration is a circle of life which, in simple terms, means that there isn't a
start or an end. Only where the herds are located at a particular time. The big determinant is the
availability of pastures. The plains of Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Serengeti are a favored spot as grass abounds and the wildebeest find a safe place to graze. It is also here that over 500,000 new calves are born and many are taken by the nearby waiting Jackals or Hyenas.
New borns have little time to strengthen their legs. As soon after birth, the “pilgrim" continues. By April, the rains are over in southern Serengeti and the plains have dried up. The great herds then
gather and face the long march northwards and westwards. The natural lawn mowers abandon
the exhausted grasslands of southern Serengeti to head for the already tall grass of the Western
corridor, near the shores of Lake Victoria.
The pioneers of the migration movement are the majestic herds of zebras. They prefer the long
stems of the coarse grass. This way, they leave behind shorter grass which is favored by the wildebeests.
In late June to July the mass start pouring into the Kenya Masai Mara reserve where fresh, tender
and mineral-rich grass is already waiting. Here they meet the resident Mara populations which
add up to about 150,000. Also commonly referred to as the Loita plains herds, they spend most of the season northeast of the Mara. When it gets dry, they pour into the interior of the Mara in search of greener pastures.
The migrating herds spend roughly 3 to 31/2 months in the Mara crossing through Sand River, which is a tributary of the Mara along the boundary of Kenya and Tanzania. They trek westwards and cross the Mara river and sometimes the Talek river. Usually around this time heavy rains on the Mau Escarpment (origin of Mara River) fill the Mara river to the brim.
This is a good time to watch the trunk-looking Crocodiles, while they await the forthcoming feast.
Finally, the gnus (wildebeests) venture into the river. This gregarious coordinated behavior of the herds, us

Tanzania Travel Information:
Tanzania's natural endowment as a wildlife safari destination is unrivalled. Wild animals roam in vast areas as God intended on that sixth day of the creation. These areas are designated as national parks and game reserves and have a high reputation for being uncrowded and unspoilt. The magnificent collection of game sanctuaries to the north of the country, near the border with Kenya, is referred to as The Northern Circuit. This is the most popular and accessible wildlife safari route in Tanzania. You can positively say that this is one of the finest game viewing areas anywhere in the world. The game aside, the spectacularly diverse cluster of eco-systems and habitats is a dazzling experience for many a visitor.

Below is some basic travel info for the visitor to Tanzania
Health
Visitors entering Tanzania from yellow fever infected areas require yellow fever international certificate of vaccination. Exemptions are made for visitors arriving from non-endemic areas such as Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. The northwestern forest region is considered a high-risk area for yellow fever. Malaria is common in Tanzania. Visitors are strongly advised to take anti-malaria medication commencing two weeks before travel.

It is recommended to take vaccinations against hepatitis A, polio and typhoid. HIV-AIDS is prevalent in the country and I cannot emphasize enough the need for protection measures. Some fresh water lakes and rivers carry the risk of Bilharzia and you are advised not to swim in such areas. Though proof of vaccination is not required, cholera is a risk throughout the country and precautions are necessary. Modern hospitals and chemists are available in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and other major urban centers.

Visas
All visitors require a visa except citizens of some African and commonwealth countries. It is advisable to obtain visa's in advance from Tanzania Embassies and High Commissions as some airlines may require it before allowing you to board. But you can also be issued with a visa on arrival at Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro international airports and at the Namanga Gate on the Kenya /Tanzania border. Passports must be valid for at least six months.

Nationals of countries exempt from visa requirements will be issued with a free visitors pass at the same entry points. Those traveling to Zanzibar should be aware that the Islands are nominally independent and passports and Tanzania visas are required even for a days visit. Visa requirements however vary from time to time and you are advised to check on prevailing status well ahead of travel.

Peoples & Culture
Tanzania is made up of 100 or so tribal groups of mainly Bantu origin. None of these groups comprise more than 10% of the population and this perhaps contributes to the tranquility the country has experienced. The most numerous groups are the Sukuma of Lake Victoria, Chaaga of Mount Kilimanjaro, Nyamwenzi of Tabora, Hehe of Iringa and the Gogo of Dodoma.

Arab and Persian influence is strong in Zanzibar. The interaction of Arabs and Bantu Africans has resulted in the Swahili language now widely spoken in Eastern and Central Africa. Those in the know say that the purest Swahili dialect is spoken in Zanzibar. Swahili is now the Lingua Franca of Tanzania although English is widely understood in urban centers.

Make sure to experience the traditional food at the coast and Zanzibar. This is quite good and is based on seafood and rice dishes. Food in the mainland is generally a little bit stodgy and less exciting. The most popular drink is a very decent brew known as Safari Lager. Tanzania music and dance is popular throughout Eastern Africa and this attests to its quality. The lyrics are usually in Swahili. Get to listen to some of it and this may even help improve on your Swahili.

Communications
Telephone, fax, telegram, post and Internet services are available in urban centers and locations popular with tourists. Direct dialing to many countries is available at most hotels in urban areas. In rural areas international calling is through the operator. The country code for Tanzania is 255.

Mobile phones are based on GSM 900/1800 network. Coverage is however limited and you are advised to check beforehand whether your GSM phone has access if you are traveling outside the main urban centres. Mobile telephony operators include Celtel, Mobitel, Tritel, Vodacom and Zanzibar Telecom. You can obtain a GSM card that will allow you to make international calls to any country. E-mail is accessible at Internet cafes to be found in urban centres around the country.

Accommodation
You will find good quality accommodation within the main routes popular with business travelers and tourists. This includes Dar es Salaam, Moshi, Arusha and the northern game parks

The Art Deco House

The Art Deco House

Modern architecture between the two world wars was a deliberate rejection of the past, causing a tension between traditional concepts of the home as warm, intimate, and comfortable and cool, futuristic visions of the house as a technological paradise.
Art Deco was an attempt to resolve these tensions. Some of the most popular and influential architects and designers of the past 150 years—Norman Bel Geddes and Richard Neutra, working in the US; Robert Mallet-Stevens in France; and Berthold Lubetkin in the UK—designed houses that could be defined as being in the Art Deco style. And Art Deco enjoys a new popularity today, unrivalled since its inception in the 1920s.

In The Art Deco House, architectural historian Adrian Tinniswood combines fascinating text and stunning photography to create an essential reference for anyone who loves Art Deco design. Captivating chapters provide detailed overviews of the design, decoration, furnishings, and gardens of the Art Deco house, covering such themes as streamline moderns; Modernist ideas for estates and apartment blocks; urbanism and domestic design; and more. Within each chapter, special stand-alone features draw upon contemporary literature, magazines, and museum exhibitions to demonstrate the style and philosophy of the Art Deco movement.

This remarkable guide also features hundreds of stunning, full-color examples of a broad range of Art Deco houses, including the House of Tomorrow by Norman Bel Geddes; the Henry House in Utrecht, Holland; Geragh in Sandycove, Dublin; and Rudolf Schindler's Los Angeles home.

• An essential source-book of Art Deco style, with scores of resplendent illustrations

• Features little-known houses from the US, France, Ireland, Germany, and Austria

• Provides fascinating insight into the lives of Art Deco architects and their clients

• Art Deco style is enjoying a resurgence in popularity

2312 Pleasanton - 1915 – Art Deco

Art Deco bungalow (possibly modified cottage). Roy Kibble, for whom the house was built, was a lumber salesman. When married in 1907, Kibble was living and working at a lumber business in Parma. In 1910 he was involved in a bizarre fatality – Thomas Dayton threatened to burn his house after Kibble accused him of stealing coal from the lumber yard, was arrested, released, went back to Parma, was threatened with arrest and in an attempt to board a moving train was hit and later died of injuries.

Art Deco – This modern style takes its name from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art) hosted in Paris in 1925. This exposition not only gave the style its name, but its ornamentation as well. In fact, the Art Deco style adheres the least to modern movement’s philosophy of functionality and limiting decoration. If anything, Art Deco emphasizes decoration though applying it to a modern form. It uses stylized plant and animal motifs as well as hard-lined, angular geometric patterning in exterior and interior ornament. It is occasionally referenced as Zigzag Moderne. Characteristics of the style include verticality, ornamented door and window surrounds, metal sash windows, and flat roofs. The style lost its popularity in the aftermath of the Great Depression, when it began to be seen as gaudy and presenting a false image of luxury. It didn’t help that the style was immediately unpopular with the modernist architectural elite for its reliance on decoration and ornamentation.

Though common in multi-story buildings such as office and apartment towers, government buildings, and smaller commercial buildings, Art Deco design is rarely employed in single-family residential architecture. The “bible” of residential architectural history, which covers design across the country, refers to the style as “extremely rare” and gives only one specific reference to an Art Deco house.

House then bought by Kampf, a real estate agent, and in 1925 sold to Martin and Margaret Anthony, a chiropractor. Anthony would have been responsible for the house as we see it today.

Art Deco: Bronze and Enamel on Black Granite

Art Deco: Bronze and Enamel on Black Granite

Ideal House was designed by architects Raymond Hood and Gordon Jeeves for the American National Radiator Company. The design was inspired by the American Radiator Building on Bryant Park in Manhattan, New York designed by Raymond Hood and John Howells. The building was constructed of polished blocks of black granite, ornamented with enamel friezes and cornices in yellows, oranges, greens and gold. The black and gold colours were the colours of the National Radiator Company. The entrances on Great Marlborough Street and Argyll Street were decorated with ornate enamel surrounds, although the surround on Argyll Street was subsequently removed.
The bronze and enamel Art Deco decoration that surrounds the window, doorways and cornice was executed by the Birmingham Guild of Handicrafts, who made fine metalwork.

Art Deco Jewelry

This indispensable volume presents in almost 800 luxurious illustrations and a lucid text the glorious achievements of Art Deco jewelry. Designers of the 1920s drew inspiration from the whole spectrum of the arts: riotous colour combinations from the Ballets Russes and the Fauves; geometric shapes from Cubism the contrast of black and white from Neo-Plasticism; a fascination with the mechanical world from Futurism; and themes from Egypt, the Far East and Africa. Raulet's informative text covers the creations of the Haute Joaillerie (the establishment jewelers such as Cartier, Van Cleef et Arpels, Mauboussin and Chaumet) and of the avant-garde designers or 'pioneers', as they were called (Jean Fouquet, Raymond Templier, Gerard Sandoz, Jean Dunand and Paul Brandt), to whom we owe some of the most brilliant and daring creations of the period. Alongside the jewelry, there is an exquisite range of accessories vanity cases, cigar and cigarette cases and a spectacular array of clocks. This invaluable book is completed by biographies of the most innovative and influential jewelers of the day, a select bibliography and a glossary.

Around The World in Eight Birthdays

Around The World in Eight Birthdays

My twin girls turned 8 over the weekend (why do their birthdays make me feel older than mine, anyway?) One has been obsessed with Japan for a long time, and both of them have become interested in other countries as a result of a poster project they did in school this past year, so they requested an "Around the World" theme for their birthday party: food from different countries to eat, games from different countries to play, and my wife even tried to put together goodie bags of candy and treats from around the world for the kids in attendance. My wife put together some spaghetti and meatballs, bought a few French meat pies, and I was tasked with cooking the rest: chicken tikka masala, mango lassis, "spotted dog", pasta, ratatouille, sushi, and the all-important birthday cake.

My kids immediately requested a cake shaped like the world—a globe, in fact. Making and decorating a spherical cake is a bit outside my skill level, so I negotiated them down to a map of the world. This is the result: a two-layer 13"x9" cake (boxed cake mix, since they wanted funfetti cake), covered in buttercream and wrapped in homemade marshmallow fondant. The map items were made by printing out a map of the world, scaled a bit to fit the dimensions of the cake, and using that as cutting templates for a little more fondant. The coloring is a brushed-on edible color powder, and the writing was done with edible markers (my handwriting is usually write-only, so this is neat for me–although I've done calligraphy in the past, these pens were more challenging to write with than I expected). The South Pacific looked a little barren, so I added a sea serpent (not to scale) and a "There Be Dragons" blurb as well. Not including baking the layers, this was a solid 3 hours of work. With the exception of a small piece of toothpick to support the head of the sea serpent, this was entirely edible.

This, of course, means that next year's request will be even more complicated. Guess I should start practicing now…

Was already running a little behind in my prep for the day, so I just whisked this out onto the porch to shoot a few shots in the natural light. I took about a dozen shots, and didn't get anything that I thought was composed quite the way I wanted, although this isn't too bad.

Vintage Farmer Bear Children's Dish Set

Vintage Farmer Bear Children's Dish Set

This is a fantastic children's dish set made from porcelain and decorated with a detailed country farmer bear! What is even more interesting about this set is that it is new, never used condition and still has the orginal "Simpsons" sticker on each piece.

The Simsons sticker in itself is a little bit of history, as it shows how the Simpsons name was branded for a very short period of time. Up until 1972 the Simppons name had an apostrophe before the last S. (Simpson's) but in an attempt to make the name friendlier to both English and French customer, they dropped the apostrophe. Then in 1973 and 1974 they gradually renamed all the Simpson stores over to the Sears name. The one flagship store in Toronto that retained the Simpsons name still sold their items branded as Simpson-Sears. In short, this set can accurately be dated to 1972-1974.

The plate is 6.5 inches wide, the bowl 4.5 inches across and 2 inches tall and the cup is 2.5 inches wide (3.5 with handle) and 3 inches tall. When the set is together the total height is 5.5 inches tall. There are no major chips, cracks, blemishes or marks on this set. All the pieces are in mint condition.

I wish they'd make some changes when it comes to housing and decorating. I don't like that the furniture isn't naturally "lit" (like it is in decoration mode) because it makes it look like no one lives there. At least, to me it does lol. Or, they should at least make the fireplaces that you buy also light up the rooms like the ones already in the house. The bought ones don't seem to do that.
